Department Description
The objective of the Economic Research Group is to play a prominent role in academic research in the economic field, at national and regional level. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of current challenges in terms of economic growth and development, migration, demographic factors, human capital and rural space, in an increasingly globalized world.
The main thematic aspects on the research agenda are:
- Migration, evaluation of public policies in the field of education and the labor market, applied econometrics (CS I Dr. Alina Botezat);
- Economic growth and development, tourism (CS II Dr. Alina Haller);
- Sustainable regional development; Cross-border cooperation Romania – Republic of Moldova (CS III Dr. Marilena Doncean);
- Decision-making under conditions of uncertainty using fuzzy numbers, regional development through smart specialization, human development, religious rural tourism (CS III Dr. Ciprian Alecu);
- Decision-making through fuzzy systems; Fuzzification of methods in operational research (fuzzy linear programming, fuzzy graphs, fuzzy matrix games, etc.), simulations with fuzzified Markov Chains (CS III Dr. Ovidiu Gherasim);
- Cultural tourism, rural tourism (CS Georgiana Tacu);
- Demography and Health Economics (CS Dr. Mihaela David).
The Department of Economic Research annually organizes 2 scientific events with international participation dedicated to tourism and rural space and the Siret-Prut-Nistru Euroregion.

Annually, at the initiative of the “Fuzzy Systems Laboratory” within the department, the national symposium Fuzzy Systems in Economy is also organized, an activity carried out within the Iași Academic Days.
Also, the members of the department edit the Institute’s Yearbook, with a 30-year tradition.
ICES-4 PROGRAM: CURRENT TRENDS IN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL THEORY AND PRACTICE
Program Pbjective: Studying current economic and social theories and phenomena, with major relevance for economic growth and social development, in order to formulate recommendations based on scientific results for policymakers and specialists in the development, implementation and evaluation of public policies.
Hypotheses/Premises: Sustainable economic growth and sustainable social development require public decisions, policies and strategies based on scientific results. Researchers in economic sciences have a professional and moral obligation to systematically study current theories and phenomena with major relevance for economic growth and social development and to provide recommendations based on scientific results for political decision-makers and specialists in the development, implementation and evaluation of public policies.

- Alina Simona Botezat completed a research internship at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), from November 17, 2019 to December 7, 2019; as project director, she submitted a project proposal entitled “Youth Migration before and after COVID-19: Who loses, Who Benefits in the Country of Origin?”, acronym YOUTHMIG, registration code PN-III-P4-ID-PCE-2020-2657, within the PCE 2020 competition, with the following researchers from abroad in her team: Dr. Karima Kourtit (Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS), ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands), Dr. Victor Cebotari (University of Luxembourg), Dr. Ștefania Simion (University of Bristol, United Kingdom); collaborated in the development of scientific articles with Raul Ramos (University of Barcelona), Heidi Vandebosch (University of Antwerp, Belgium) and Peter Nijkamp (Open University, Heerlen, the Netherlands), who, according to RePEc, is in the top 30 of the most famous economists in the world (Hirsh index: 36 in WoS); is in the management team for Romania within the COST 18115 action: Transnational Collaboration on Bullying, Migration and Integration at School Level, coordinated by Prof. James O’Higgins Norman (Dublin City University, Ireland); participated, as a partner for Romania, within the team coordinated by Prof. Cathal O’Donoghue (National University of Ireland, Galway), in the submission of the project RECOVER – Research Enabling post-COVid Enhanced Recoveries(ID: 101016300) within the H2020-SC1-PHE-CORONAVIRUS-2020-2-RTD competition; participated, as a partner for Romania, within the team coordinated by Dr. Christof Van Mol (Tilburg University, Netherlands), in the submission of the project European Network on International Student Mobility: Connecting Research and Practice (ID: OC-2020-1-24634) within the COST Action competition; as a member of the Network of Experts on the Social Dimension of Education of Training (NESET II), coordinated by the Public Policy and Management Institute, Vilnius, Lithuania, contributed to the proposal of themes (teasers) for the European Commission;
