Department Description

The Rural Economics Collective was established in 1990 under the aegis of the Institute of Agrarian Economics (National Institute of Economic Research “Costin C. Kirițescu”) Bucharest, Romanian Academy, and since 1994, it has been part of the Romanian Academy, Iași Branch within the “Gheorghe Zane” Institute of Economic and Social Research.

The current members of the department are: Dr. Krisztina Melinda Dobay (member of the collective since 1992), Dr. Daniela Matei (since 2000), Dr. Ioan Sebastian Brumă (since 2004), Dr. Lucian Tanasă (since 2007), Dr. Sebastian Doboş (since 2009).

The team also included: Dr. Valentin Mihai Bohareţ (1990-2019), Dr. Ştefan Amariţei (1990-2000), Dr. Gheorghe Bănățeanu (1990-1997 †), Dr. Gheorghe Ionesei (1990-2006 †), Dr. Aurelian Iftimescu (1990-1992), Dr. Petru Ivanof (1990-2007 †), Dr. Cristian Romeo Hotea (1992-2002), Dr. Cristian Valeriu Patriche (1997-2000).

The contents of the research themes and the skills currently held by the 5 researchers in the team are oriented towards fundamental, exploratory and applied research of rural areas in the North-East Development Region.

The proposed academic objectives aim to analyze the development factors of the agricultural, forestry and non-agricultural components specific to the rural economy.

Our research is based on the following principles:

  • diversifying the structure of the rural economy by making the use of local agri-food resources, non-agricultural activities and services more efficient;
  • improving the quality of life of village residents;
  • balance between the development of economic activities and the natural environment;
  • preserving the quality of the natural environment and focusing on sustainable development.

Current research directions are oriented towards the implementation of the Research Program “Development of rural space in the North-Eastern Region of Romania” by addressing topics such as: prospective assessments of cooperation and association in rural areas, vectors that determine the dynamics of rural space, trends in the development of organic agriculture, the development of local agri-food markets, the integration and promotion of the concept of a short supply chain, respectively small agricultural holdings in the interwar period. Each of the mentioned themes details, on different but complementary levels, economic, social and environmental problems or resilience solutions to major transformations of the current context in which rural communities in the North-East Development Region of Romania evolve and confer social purpose and economic impact on them.

The research activity carried out has as fundamental benchmarks: performance, quality of the works and connection to the global flows and circuits of scientific values. The publication of the research results in journals located at the top of the scientific world rankings (Agricultural Systems, Journal of Rural Studies, Sustainability, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Agriculture) has greatly increased the visibility of the research carried out. In the same context, as a result of the scientific expertise acquired, the Rural Economy Collective has carried out, over time, 15 national extra-budgetary research projects and 10 international research projects and is the promoter of an active partnership with socio-economic actors from the North East Development Region, territorial communities and civil society representatives, who request the expertise of researchers for regional, national and European prospective studies. It is traditional to collaborate with local, regional and national institutions that share a common concern for rural development (Institute of Agrarian Economics – National Institute of Economic Research “Costin C. Kirițescu”, Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, University of Life Sciences “Ion Ionescu de la Brad” in Iași, National Institute for Research and Development for Biological Sciences, Academy of Economic Sciences Bucharest, Research Institute for Agricultural Economics and Rural Development) county agricultural departments, associations, foundations, interprofessional agricultural organizations, producer groups and consultants.

Along with the research programs and projects carried out, the studies, reports and volumes published within them, the Rural Economy Collective organizes annual scientific events within the Iași Academic Days and, occasionally, workshops and round tables in order to disseminate scientific results from the projects implemented by the members of the collective.

Research Program

ICES-5 PROGRAM: RURAL SPACE DEVELOPMENT IN THE NORTH-EAST REGION OF ROMANIA

Program Objective: Researching the realities of rural space in the North-East Region of Romania, both in the current context and from a historical perspective, in order to identify optimal policies and strategies for compatibility with the principles, values and developments of the rural space of the European Union (such as sustainable development, increased quality of life, social inclusion, equal opportunities, etc.).

Hypotheses/Premises: The current socio-economic issues of rural areas are insufficiently studied. The phenomenological and structural diversity of the rural environment, the changes that the Romanian village is going through, as well as its development possibilities are topics whose research is imperative, especially given that the Romanian rural area is characterized by realities such as poverty, social exclusion, gender inequality, the weak development of social economy organizations with an impact on agrarian structures or the inadequate use of natural resources. Sustainable rural development and the relaunch of the social, economic and spiritual life of the Romanian village in accordance with the values and developments of the rural area of the European Union constitute an indispensable component of the economic, cultural and political development of Romanian society. Achieving the objective of sustainable rural development requires the elaboration and implementation of well-founded scientific principles, strategies and development directions.

Activities

Regular Activities

The members of the team organize annual scientific sessions and symposia within the framework of the Iași Academic Days. Among the most recent scientific events we mention:

  • The “Agro-Economy and Rural Anthropology” symposium, organized since 2020, supports the research and intervention community in rural socio-economy, providing an opportunity for the exchange of experience between the main actors contributing to the development of rural space in the current context. Bringing together researchers, representatives of economic units, governance and public administration, non-governmental organizations, farmers, processors, etc., the symposium contributes to the rural development process by putting into debate topics regarding: agronomy, ecology, distribution chains, agritourism, consumer behavior, rural sociology, ethnology and ethnography, physical or linguistic anthropology, archaeology, visual anthropology, rural anthrozoology and everything related to rural life, in its contemporary aspects.
  • The national scientific session “Vectors of rural development in the North-Eastern Region of Romania”, with the first edition organized in 2021, approaches the regional rural space from the point of view of current economic and social factors, which orient rural areas towards a development based on multifunctionality. Whether we consider natural, human or financial capital, the particularities offered by local entrepreneurship, the workforce or the accessibility of rural populations to services, communities manage these factors differently, with a determining role in rural dynamics. The scientific event focuses on the driving forces of current development, starting from the premise that rural areas are no longer characterized only by the agricultural economy, but host multiple complementary activities.
