Project ICES-1.1: The morality of special relationships. The constitution of the subject as a moral person

The general objective of the project is to develop a theory of special obligations as the basis for the formation of moral personality.

Specific objectives:

1) analysis of special relationships from the perspective of compatibility with and integration into the system of general obligations;

2) demonstration of the fundamental role of special relationships for the formation of personal and group moral identity;

3) explanation and interpretation of everyday moral dilemmas from the perspective of the conflict of grounds and loyalties generated by special relationships.

The topics addressed in the project include:

1) impartiality: universal condition of morality; objective and subjective grounds of action;

2) cases, types, situations of suspension of the condition of impartiality;

3) biased attitude as an ethical phenomenon;

4) criticism of impartial moral theories in terms of the alleged deficiency in explaining the moral constraints specific to special relationships (or close relationships);

5) the morality of relationships generated by special circumstances (friendship, family, intimacy, admiration, dependence, subordination, hostility, competition, etc.);

6) the constitutive and dissolutive factors of special relationships; communication, closeness, communion – rejection, distancing, separation;

7) special obligations in distant relationships (obligations towards strangers, towards future generations, towards other forms of life, etc.).

Research topic for 2024: Special obligations in long-distance relationships

General objective: the possibility that the source and relevance of the basis of legitimacy of moral obligations may vary with certain circumstantial factors will be analyzed.

Specific objectives: 1) explaining and interpreting everyday moral dilemmas generated by the conflict between impersonal morality and loyalties generated by special relationships; 2) analyzing the moderating role of circumstantial factors (such as distance in time and space) in generating grounds for moral obligations.
